According to preliminary data from International Data Corporation, the number of traditional PCs shipped around the world in the third quarter of 2022 (2Q22) dropped 15% from the same time last year to 74.3 million units. Shipments increased in the quarter compared to Q2 2022, but it is less compared to 87.3 million in Q3 2021.
Decrease in shipments is due to reduction in demand and uneven supply. “However, shipment volumes remain well above pre-pandemic levels when PC volumes were largely driven by commercial refreshes due to the looming end of support for Windows 7,” said IDC.
Lenovo remained on the top with 22.7% share, but its shipments declined 16.1% YoY. HP’s shipments declined 27.8% and Dell’s shipments declined 21.2% YoY.
Compared to a decline in the previous quarter, Apple posted 40.2% growth. IDC says that this is due to the increase in supply to make up for lost orders due to lockdowns in China during the second quarter. We should hear more about this during’s Apple’s earnings later this month.
Acer, which was in the fifth spot in Q3 2021 and 4th place in the previous quarter is nowhere to be seen in the top 5, and ASUS which was in the last place in the previous quarter remains in the same place, but the shipments decline 19.4% YoY.
